Indian Army needed to win by a margin of three goals against 1 Ladakh FC to secure their spot in the quarterfinals of the Durand Cup. However, their 4-2 victory fell short of the required goal difference, ending their campaign in the tournament.
The game started with Indian Army dominating possession and creating chances early on. Their efforts paid off in the 8th minute when Indian Army midfielder Rana Gharami scored the first goal. They added another one to their tally in the 40th minute, thanks to striker Naro Hari Shrestha. The teams went into halftime with Indian Army leading 2-0.
In the second half, 1 Ladakh FC fought back fiercely, scoring two goals in quick succession to narrow the gap and excitement to just one goal. This momentum shift prompted Indian Army to make a substitution, bringing in Vetson Limaye to inject momentum into their attack.
The substitution paid off as Indian Army extended their lead again in the 77th minute through striker Qamar Naqbi's goal to make it 3-2. Shortly after, Vetson Limaye scored another to seal the deal and secure a comfortable 4-2 lead for Indian Army.
However, despite the victory, Indian Army's +2 goal difference wasn't enough to secure a top-two finish among second-placed teams. They ended their Durand Cup campaign with six points from three matches, narrowly missing out on a spot in the quarterfinals.
"We are disappointed not to have qualified despite the good result today. Our defense has been solid all tournament, but we couldn't get the goals we needed early on to make the difference against 1 Ladakh FC," Indian Army captain Satyajit Basu Divis admitted.
"We are proud of our team's performance throughout the tournament and we will take lessons from this experience as we look to improve for future competitions," he added.
