Italy forward Giacomo Raspadori has joined Atletico Madrid from Napoli for 20 million euros to ease the club's attacking concerns ahead of the new season. Raspadori, who scored the winning goal in Serie A for Napoli against Juventus last season, has signed a six-year contract, Spanish media reported on Wednesday.
The forward is Diego Simeone's first signing of the summer and the Argentine hopes his fellow countryman can replicate the form that saw him score eight goals in 55 appearances for Napoli.
Atletico had a difficult pre-season, losing to lowly Bournemouth and being dumped out of the Champions League qualifiers by Sporting Lisbon. They also lacked a cutting edge up front with veteran forward Luis Suarez struggling with injury problems.
But Raspadori, who also won the Scudetto with Napoli in 2023, has joined for 20 million euros ($23.2 million), according to Spanish media reports. The transfer fee is within the release clause of the contract he signed with Napoli last year.
"I am very happy and proud to be here," Raspadori told Atletico's website. "I thank the club for their trust and I promise to give it all to give my best to this great club."
The forward, who turned 22 last month, will be hoping to secure a place in Italy's World Cup squad for this year's tournament in Qatar.
With Spain international Nico Williams and Portugal's Joao Felix also in Atletico's squad, Simeone now has plenty of options in attack. The move has raised speculation about the future of Matheus Cunha, with reports in Spain suggesting the club are open to offers for the 22-year-old Brazil forward, who joined for 60 million euros from Hertha Berlin last year.
