Baloch Liberation Army And Majeed Brigade Designated As Terrorists

The United States Department of State has categorized the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) and its front, the Majeed Brigade, as Foreign Terrorist Organizations. The move comes after years of pressure exerted by Pakistan on the US government to designate the group as a terrorist organization.

The BLA is a separatist militant organization that advocates for Balochistan's independence from Pakistan. The province, located in the southwest of the country, has long complained of discrimination at the hands of the federal government, asserting that its share of resources and revenue is not fairly distributed. The group has been implicated in various attacks within Pakistan, notably the August 2018 attacks on the Chinese consulate in Karachi, in which several civilians were wounded.

The designation of the BLA as a terrorist organization will result in the application of sanctions against the group, including freezes on assets that they may hold in the US, and a prohibition on US individuals and entities from providing material support to the BLA.

The decision was welcomed by the Pakistani government, with the Foreign Ministry issuing a statement praising the US government for "recognizing the threat that BLA poses to the regional peace and stability."

The US State Department, in a statement, emphasized its concern about the threat posed by the BLA and its potential to commit acts of terrorism. "Today's designation notifies the US public and the international community that BLA and Majeed Brigade meet the criteria for designation as an FTO pursuant to ..." the statement read, adding that "the designation underscores the United States' commitment to stability in Pakistan and the region."

The move is likely to further strengthen Pakistan's efforts to curb the activities of the BLA and similar groups operating in the country, and it is a significant step in fostering cooperation between the two countries.
