Vijayawada: The three YSRCP members nominated for the Rajya Sabha from Andhra Pradesh filed their nominations on Monday. Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy handed over the B forms to Golla Babu Rao, Y. V. Subba Reddy, and Meda Raghunath Reddy at his camp office, after which they submitted their nomination papers to the assembly joint secretary, who is the returning officer for the Rajya Sabha election in the state. Given their current strength in the assembly, YSRCP is set to secure all three seats.
The ruling party’s representation in the Rajya Sabha will rise to 11 from nine. In contrast, for the first time since its formation, TDP will have no representation in the Upper House of Parliament as its sole member, Kanakamedala Ravindra Kumar, is set to complete his tenure on April 2. Vemireddy Prabhakar Reddy and C. M. Ramesh are the other two MPs whose terms will also end.
YSRCP currently holds 151 MLAs, while TDP has only 22 MLAs in the assembly following the resignation of Ganta Srinivas Rao. The number further dropped to 19 after three MLAs defected to YSRCP after the 2019 election. Although some ruling party MLAs recently shifted their loyalties to TDP, the party’s high command is not confident enough to field a candidate.
Meanwhile, the assembly speaker has issued notices to rebel YSRCP MLAs to explain why action should not be taken against them for anti-party activities. A decision on the disqualification of rebel MLAs from both TDP and YSRCP will likely alter the situation. To elect a Rajya Sabha member, at least 44 MLAs are required. Although TDP has prepared the necessary documents for filing the nomination, the party leadership has yet to make a final decision.
