Pomeranian 'Hero' Scout Pursues Bear Out of Canadian Home

A tiny Pomeranian nicknamed Scout is being called a "hero" after chasing a black bear out of its owner's home in Vancouver, Canada.

The 5-pound pooch surprised Emma Philippson when she arrived home from work one evening to find her balcony door open and Scout barking loudly. That's when Philippson noticed claw marks on the balcony railing and a massive bear on the patio furniture. "Scout just would not stop barking at the bear," Philippson told CNN. "It was pretty crazy."

The tiny pup chased the massive mammal off Philippson's balcony and out of the apartment building, saving the resident from an unwanted visitor. Philippson shared a video of the incident on TikTok, which quickly went viral. The footage shows a barking Scout racing back and forth on the balcony as the bear looks up at the sky, as if considering its options.

"I was standing at the sliding door trying to film the bear... and Scout was just barking her head off," Philippson told The Vancouver Sun. "It was a bit of a stand-off."

Bear sightings in the Vancouver area have become commonplace in recent months, causing many residents to worry. However, it is unlikely that Scout's bold behavior has any significant impact on the city's wildlife. Bear sightings continue to rise alongside a growing abundance of natural food sources, which usually coincides with the onset of warmer weather.

Despite the bear's apparent discomfort with Scout's barking, the pup escaped unscathed. Its actions perhaps saved the furniture, too, as the bear merely scratched a table and tossed a cushion into some plants, according to Philippson. After scattering a little longer, the bear eventually wandered back into the nearby woods.

"I didn't realize a 5-pound dog could scare away a 500-pound bear," Philippson told CNN. "But she definitely saved the day."
