The BCCI continues to be criticised for the workload management of its superstar fast bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, after he reportedly suffered an injury amid the ongoing England tour. This criticism comes shortly after another Indian fast bowler, Mohammed Shami, was hospitalized due to acute inflammation of the pancreas, which has ruled him out of the rest of the tour.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been under fire from fans and cricket analysts alike for its handling of the workload of its fast bowlers. With the T20I World Cup set to take place in Australia this year, followed by an Indian tour, and then the ODI World Cup in India in 2023, critics are questioning whether BCCI is doing enough to manage the workload of its players, especially its fast bowlers.
With the injury now suffered by Jasprit Bumrah, the spotlight is back on BCCI, with many asking how this could have been avoided.
One of the main issues critics have is with the scheduling of matches. Often, there is very little time between games, and this doesn't give the bowlers adequate time to rest and recover. This issue was recently highlighted by former Indian cricketer-turned-commentator, Aakash Chopra, who spoke out against the scheduling of the match between India and New Zealand. The match was originally scheduled for Thursday, June 23; however, due to the rain, the match was pushed to Sunday, June 26, causing an overlap with the inaugural final of the Women's IPL.
Speaking about this oversight, Chopra tweeted: "Men's cricket always comes first for BCCI and it's reflected in the scheduling too. When there is a women's game scheduled, there is always a men's game around the corner. Can they not do without interfering with the Women's IPL?"
Only time will tell whether BCCI takes action to mitigate the poor workload management that seems to be plaguing India's fast bowlers.
