Zelensky Calls PM Modi, Urges Cap On Russian Oil Export; Moscow Shows No Readiness For Ceasefire

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a conference with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss a cap on Russian oil exports and the ongoing war with Russia. The conversation came as Russia showed no willingness to engage in a ceasefire.

The Ukrainian president also raised the possibility of sanctions on Russia over the war. The call between the two leaders came ahead of a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi in Moscow on 29 July.

According to a readout of the call from the Ukrainian side, Zelenskyy stressed the "utmost importance" of bringing pressure to bear on Moscow through sanctions aimed at limiting the Kremlin's ability to finance its aggression. The two leaders also discussed ways to strengthen India's role in mitigating the consequences of the war.

Zelensky thanked Modi for the delivery of Indian humanitarian assistance to Ukraine, worth $20 million, and highlighted the importance of its distribution to the affected population. He also stressed the importance of reaching a diplomatic solution to the conflict and noted that any peaceful solution would be linked to the withdrawal of Russian troops from the territories of Ukraine.

For his part, PM Modi expressed concern about the situation unfolding in Ukraine and emphasized the importance of calming tensions and resolving the crisis through diplomacy and dialogue. He also emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety and security of the civilian population. The two leaders agreed to continue their dialogue on the crisis.
