Earlier this year, senior IPS officer A.R. Rao's career took a hit when his daughter Ranya Rao was arrested at the Bengaluru airport, allegedly carrying 14.2 kg of gold worth nearly 12.5 crores from Dubai. While the younger Rao faced punishment, the senior official was reportedly serving compulsory leave. Now, three months later, it appears that compulsion has been revoked.
What happened: After the incident in March, the Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) of the Karnataka State Industrial Security Force (KSISF) was relieved of his duties. The officer, who was already due for retirement this month, has now been reinstated to his post, according to recent reports.
Speaking to the media, senior officer Rao stated, "I have not received any order to the effect that the compulsory waiting period has been revoked. I have complete faith in the system and will only comment once I receive the official order."
While Compulsory Waiting, the term in reference to an official's period of abstinence from duty, has been lifted, the officer will still undergo an investigation regarding his position. The officer has been ordered to report to the state headquarters of the Directorate of Industrial Security Force in Madiwala, Bengaluru.
The outcome of the investigation, which is expected to conclude within six months, will determine A.R. Rao's future in the service.
While speaking on the condition of anonymity, a senior official from the department revealed that A.R. Rao is likely to be given a softer assignment after his retirement, which is just around the corner.
Regardless, the move has been seen as a positive step in the state's efforts to address the issue of gold smuggling, which has plagued officials for years. With senior officials facing scrutiny, it appears that the issue is being taken more seriously than ever before.
