Abhishek Banerjee urges PM to quit, Lok Sabha to be dissolved if SIR held nationwide

Trinamool MP Abhishek Banerjee has criticised the "selective approach" of the Election Commission of India (ECI) in responding to a letter requesting the use of the Sewa Integrity Restoration (SIR) in voting machines nationwide.

Speaking to the media, Banerjee stated that the move would restore voter confidence in the electoral system of India, ensuring that votes are protected and that democracy in the country is strengthened.

Banerjee criticised the ECI for its refusal to use the SIR in voting machines in the states where Trinamool is contesting elections, accusing the ECI of an apparent selective approach and interference in the election process.

"If the ECI is genuinely committed to ensuring free and fair elections, they should implement the SIR across the country, not just in certain states," said Banerjee. "The PM should resign if the SIR is implemented nationally and give the people of India the opportunity to decide who will lead them through the next five years."

Banerjee also called for the dissolution of the Lok Sabha and the holding of a new election if the SIR was implemented nationwide, claiming that the current government's victory in the 2019 elections was not achieved fairly.

Only time will tell whether the ECI will respond to this criticism and whether they will take on board Banerjee's requests.

"Only when the electoral process ensures that every vote is correctly recorded and protected can we have true faith in our great democracy."
