Srikalahasti Temple Sets New Record for Rahu Ketu Pujas on Aadi Amavasya

On Sunday, the renowned Srikalahasti Temple in Tirupati district saw an unprecedented number of devotees participating in Rahu Ketu pujas, setting a new record. The auspicious occasion of Aadi Amavasya, which coincided with a holiday, attracted a massive crowd to the temple. A total of 9,168 devotees took part in the Rahu Ketu pujas, surpassing the previous record of 7,597 set on June 18 last year. The temple, known for these rituals, witnessed approximately 33,000 visitors throughout the day. The Srikalahastheeswara Swamy Temple holds unique significance in Hindu mythology, with Lord Shiva and Goddess Gnana Prasunambika believed to incarnate as Rahu and Ketu. This belief is reflected in the temple’s iconography, where a five-headed serpent (Ketu) adorns Lord Shiva’s head, and a single-headed serpent (Rahu) forms the waist belt of Ammavaru. Devotees believe that prayers to these deities can alleviate dosham (negative influences).
Although Rahu Ketu pujas were conducted throughout the day, the highest number of devotees attended during the Rahu Kalam period, considered the most auspicious. The temple reported that 5,183 devotees bought 500-ticket packages for the pujas, followed by 2,288 with 750-ticket packages, 933 with 1,500, 610 with 2,500, and 154 with 5,000-ticket packages. In addition to the Rahu Ketu pujas, 8,162 tickets for Seeghra darshan and special entrance were sold. The Devasthanam also sold 29,505 packets of various prasadams in a single day, generating a total income of ₹1 crore.
