Tamil Nadu's Department of Rural Development and Panchayat has released data showing that Salem district has the highest number of beneficiaries under the CM Thayumanavar Scheme. This welfare initiative provides financial aid to families of manual scavengers and those engaged in taboo industries. Shockingly, the state has nearly 5,000 manual scavengers who directly engage in sanitation work.
The scheme, named after a prominent leader in the elimination of manual scavenging, provides a sum of Rs. 35,000 to each beneficiary's family. Notably, this amount has been increased from the previous figure of Rs. 20,000 under a previous scheme.
The enhanced financial assistance seeks to provide relief and rehabilitation to those affected by manual scavenging practices. This progressive step forward is hoped to reduce the oppression and untoward conditions faced by manual scavengers in the state.
The data further revealed that Coimbatore and Tiruppur districts follow Salem in terms of beneficiary count under this vital welfare scheme. Overall, since the introduction of the scheme, Tamil Nadu has seen a nearly 50% increase in beneficiaries across the state.
This news is a positive step toward equal opportunities and justice for those engaged in manual scavenging. It is a welcome move in the right direction to uplift those working in taboo industries and improve their lives significantly.
