Bottle buy-back scheme in TASMAC outlets to be extended if successful, says Minister Muthusamy

Tamil Nadu's liquor retailers, TASMAC, are set to extend their experimental bottle buy-back scheme, according to local Minister Muthusamy. The scheme, currently operating in one liquor shop in Chennai, offers buyers a discount of Rs 5 (less than 1 US cent) for every returned bottle. If extended, the scheme will be rolled out in shops across the state.

Speaking at a press conference, Muthusamy stated: "The pilot project was launched in one of the TASMAC shops at Anna Nagar in Chennai one-and-a-half months ago. Based on its success and positive response from the customers, the scheme will be extended in all the liquor shops in a week."

The scheme was introduced to encourage customers to return bottles, thereby reducing the number of bottles ending up in landfills. In its first three weeks, the scheme witnessed the return of around 550 bottles.

The successful scheme is a positive step towards reducing pollution in the state, and locals are hopeful about its effects if rolled out comprehensively.

"It's a welcome move by the TASMAC and will benefit the environment and the public at large," said Rm Subramanian, a resident of Chennai.

The success of the scheme could prompt other states to follow suit, potentially leading to a reduction in environmental pollution across the whole of India.
