Congress MP Jairam Ramesh mocks Lok Sabha, cites Jagdeep Dhankhar's remarks

In a sharp attack on Tuesday, Congress MP Jairam Ramesh mocked the Lok Sabha after it accepted the notice to impeach Justice Yashwant Varma, saying that the parliament's lower house didn't understand former Rajya Sabha chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar's "fantastic" July 26 remarks. He stated that the remarks clearly stated that the Rajya Sabha was a "more dignified" house than the Lok Sabha.

Jairam Ramesh, the Congress MP, cited a press conference on July 26, 2022, during which Dhankhar, who was serving as the Rajya Sabha chairman, made remarks regarding the procedure for impeachment, quoting the latter as saying that "a notice for impeachment of a judge of the Supreme Court cannot be admitted and it is only the Rajya Sabha that can do it. The press conference itself is a fantastic event."

He also emphasized how the Rajya Sabha chairman's remarks highlighted the "dignified" nature of the upper house, stating that it's "a place where conscience is voiced, and the rights of people of India, particularly those who are from the marginal sections of society, are protected."

The remarks by Jairam Ramesh came after the Lok Sabha accepted a notice to remove Justice Varma, triggering a 7-day countdown that will lead to the formation of a committee to probe the charges against the Supreme Court judge.

As the impeachment proceedings continue to unfold, the Congress MP's remarks have added a new dimension to the debate surrounding the constitutional procedures and the public perception of the country's legislative branches.
