A recent study published in the journal Advances in Political Psychology reported some rather unsettling results. According to the study, many scientists are largely ignorant of the very scientific discoveries that formed the basis for modern day scientific understanding. The quiz posed 10 basic questions to over 1000 scientists across various disciplines, questioning their knowledge on subjects thought to be universally known among those in the field. The questions included lacked of familiarity with what the scientists should have known easily, such as the story of Mendelian genetics, the discovery of the Earth's age, or the concepts of pH levels and torsion balances. Even more shockingly, the study revealed that a whopping 81% of the scientists surveyed failed to answer even half of the quiz questions correctly.

This begs the question, why is this happening? How could scientists, who are supposed to be experts in their respective fields, be ignorant of such foundational scientific concepts? The study suggests that the lack of familiarity may be due to a divide in the specialization of scientists today. These foundational discoveries are often not covered in any substantial way in their respective fields, and many of the scientists surveyed admitted to specializing in a field different than the one they originally studied.

Furthermore, the overwhelming consensus is that these scientists, despite their ignorance of these concepts, are still confident in their ability to understand the foundational concepts of their craft, and do not feel the need to familiarize themselves with them as a result. The study suggests a somewhat alarming oversight in the scientific community, where the specialized nature of scientific research today may be causing a lack of proper understanding or ignorance of key scientific discoveries and their concepts among scientists.
