Fenerbahce Overturn defea at the hands of Feyenoord To Reach Champions League Play-Offs

In one of the most dramatic turnarounds in UEFA Champions League history, Fenerbahce managed to overturn a 2-1 deficit against Feyenoord to advance into the Champions League qualifying play-offs. The second leg saw Fenerbahce dominate the Dutch side, winning 5-2 which was enough to advance on aggregate. This defeat spells trouble for Feyenoord, who will now be unable to compete for the Champions League group stage spot.

Fenerbahce's incredible comeback was full of high moments. The home side went ahead through a deflected trap in the area after just six minutes, and doubled their advantage just past the hour, again the ball finding its way past Feyenoord 's Dutch international goalkeeper Justin Bijlow. Fenerbahce pulled one back instantly, with Turkish international Ismail Kartal reducing the deficit with a fine header, and they drew level just past the hour, atural scorer Mergim Berisha, whose shot went in via the far post.

The winning goal came on the night via a Feyenoord defender, who unfortunately put the ball into his own net to make it 4-2. Fenerbahce piled on more pressure, and a penalty shootout looked inevitable until the 94th minute, when Fenerbahce scored a fabulous solo goal to make it 5-2.

Feyenoord, who won the Dutch league championship for the first time in 18 years back in May, had looked on course to join Champions League group stage. Instead, they will now participate in the Europa League play-offs, while Fenerbahce progresses to the Champions League play-offs, where they will face either Olympiacos from Greece or HJK Helsinki from Finland, with the first leg scheduled for August 18.
