20-year-old Rohith Krishna S has become India's 89th Chess Grandmaster, registering six points from a possible nine at the Almaty Masters Qonaev Cup in Kazakhstan.
Rohith's impressive performance earned him his third and final grandmaster norm.
Coached by K. Visweswaran, Rohith is the second Indian to achieve the feat in 2022 after D. Gukesh's achievement in January. Gukesh was 15 years old when he earned the title.
Rohith's achievement is a testament to his dedication and talent, and we can expect to see more great things from him in the future.
His performance in Almaty brought the country closer to an all-time high of 100 chess grandmasters. Currently, India has 88 grandmasters, which includes three women chess players.
With the young prodigy's win, India continues to strengthen its position as a global powerhouse in the sport.
Chess is becoming increasingly popular in India, particularly as it has become widely televised. This has exposed the sport to newer and bigger audiences across the vast country.
We wish Rohith Krishna S. all the very best in his future endeavors, and eagerly anticipate his next batch of ingenious moves on the board.
