Typhoon Podul hit Taiwan on August 13, causing widespread destruction and power blackouts in several areas of the country. The typhoon, considered the strongest this year, produced gusts of up to 178 kilometers per hour in Taitung County. The storm disrupted flights and grounded all forms of transportation. It also cut power to tens of thousands and caused widespread damage to infrastructure, including fallen trees and signs.
This latest disaster comes less than a month after Taiwan was hit by several other storms and is causing further setbacks in regions still recovering from the earlier storms.
According to reports, as of now, one person is still missing, and the storm has injured 33 people and forced over 7,300 evacuations.
Though the storm has passed, Taiwan's Emergency Operations Center reported that the cleanup will be a lengthy one.
The country is no stranger to tropical cyclones, but Typhoon Podul has dealt a significant blow to Taiwan. The exact extent of the damage is still being assessed, and it will be a while until things return to normal for the nation and its people.
