England's bowling attack struggled to contain Shubman Gill as the young Indian opener scored a remarkable double hundred during the team's tour of England. While the experienced Yuvraj Singh didn't shy away from praising the 23-year old, he also reflected on his own England tour experience and how it helped propel his career.
"Absolutely brilliant (Gill's performance). I had a little bit of luck in 2006 (when I scored a double hundred). I was told that this pitch is going to be a devil and it was. I was a little lucky as the pitch eased out later on for the other batsmen," Yuvraj said during an interaction with fans on Instagram.
"But the way Gill has constructed his innings and shown discipline, there are a lot of question marks over the (England) bowlers. They (England) bowled very well in the first innings but Gill held on and he has future ahead of him," he added.
Yuvraj, who scored a memorable 157 during the 2006 tour of England, highlighted how the challenging conditions can help a player's growth and future prospects.
"When you do well in England, you can do well anywhere. So, I am very happy for Gill. He has done well and he has a bright future," said the former cricketer.
During the Instagram live, Yuvraj also revealed his favorite memory from the iconic 2011 World Cup victory and what he feels could have been done differently during that epic final against Sri Lanka.
"Winning the World Cup was the most amazing feeling, I couldn't even believe it. We had a great team and our bowling attack was phenomenal. We just had a great balance," he recalled.
"Everybody chipped in, everybody had a day when they performed and we just rode the wave. We didn't think too much (about) who was going to perform, who will win us the game. (We were) Just going there, doing our best and enjoying each other's company," he added.
When quizzed about the final, Yuvraj said he would probably revert to the same team had he been in MS Dhoni's shoes.
"I think we almost chased down the target. When Dhoni came in (at the fall of the fourth wicket) I was batting with him and we just wanted to take the game as deep as possible because we knew we could rely on Dhoni to finish it off," he recounted.
"We wanted to take it as deep as possible and then capitalize in the end. I think we almost achieved (the target) but we lost too many wickets (in the end)," he added.
Despite the close finish, Yuvraj said he wouldn't change anything and would stick to the same team if he were to play that final again.
"Everyone who played had an opportunity to play in that game. I don't think we could have changed anything. Everyone came into the game and everyone had an impact," he said.
