The Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) has urged the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, M. K. Stalin, to immediately form a Cabinet sub-committee to review the findings of the Nagamohan Das Commission report, which was constituted to recommend the proper implementation of reservation for Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) in the state.
The industry body emphasized the importance of including all relevant stakeholders in the process and expressed concern that the current political atmosphere might not be conducive to making such important decisions. The CII also recommended that the sub-panel be headed by a senior minister who does not belong to a scheduled caste or tribe, but it should include all the ministers belonging to the scheduled castes and tribes.
The commission's report, which was submitted in 2021, recommended that the state government increase the reservation quota from the current 19% to a possible 31%, in line with a 2018 Supreme Court directive. The commission's findings and recommendations have yet to be reviewed by the cabinet.
The industry group's recommendation came in the form of a letter to the CM, which also urged the state government to take swift and decisive action to address the issue of reservation for SCs and STs in the state. The letter acknowledged the importance of ensuring that all affected parties have a say in the process and that the final decision is made with the utmost care and consideration for all affected communities.
The CII's plea to form a Cabinet sub-committee to review the Nagamohan Das Commission report is a significant step towards ensuring that all stakeholders have a chance to be heard and that the issue of reservation for SCs and STs in Tamil Nadu is given the attention it deserves.
Only time will tell whether the CM will respond to this call for action and whether this process will lead to meaningful change for these communities in the state.
