Semiconductors Complex Ltd in Chandigarh started operations in 1983: Congress on PMs swipe

In a sharp rebuttal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's remarks targeting the Congress party, the party hit back on Friday with facts about the Semiconductors Complex Limited in Chandigarh, which was started in 1983. The Congress alleged that the Prime Minister's comments were an attempt to distract attention from the real issues that the country is currently facing.

Congress leader Abhishek Singhvi shared details of the operations of the Semiconductor Complex Limited (SCL) on Friday, a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi accused the Congress of having killed the idea of semiconductors in the country 50-60 years ago.

The SCL was established in 1983 in the Union Territory of Chandigarh by the then Union Ministry of Electronics with Taiwan Government's technical assistance. The facility was meant to fabricate and package semiconductor devices and chips and provide a boost to the development of silicon semiconductor technology in the country. However, it started its commercial operations in 1989.

"The semiconductors facility in Chandigarh, established with Taiwan's assistance, was conceived, established, and nurtured by the Congress party," Singhvi said.

The Congress party has been targeting the Modi government over the situation in the country relating to the supply of semiconductors and their chips, which have impacted the auto industry significantly, causing a slowdown and job losses. The party has been asking why the government didn't act when other countries started investing heavily in the semiconductor industry and reliant on imports.

The Congress party has accused the Modi government of ignoring the semiconductor industry despite knowing the critical importance of the chips in the entire ecosystem of smartphones, consumer electronics, and the automotive industry. It alleged that the government didn't take the necessary steps to ensure the country had a reliable and local supply of semiconductors.

The party has demanded the Modi government focus on the semiconductor industry and facilitate its growth with the same urgency as was seen towards the production and vaccination for COVID-19.
