In a pre-summit interview, the former president outlines his goals for the meeting with Putin, saying that the talks will center primarily around Ukraine but declining to confirm whether he will raise sanctions against Russia or the alleged bounty on US soldiers.
Trump sat down with Fox News' Sean Hannity on Monday, detailing his goals for the upcoming meeting with Putin, particularly commenting on the situation in Ukraine and his hopes for the future of the country.
"I know that Russia and the United States together have a very, very good chance of negotiating a really good deal, and maybe even one day, with Ukraine, getting them in. But right now is not the right time," Trump said, emphasizing the prospect of future US-Russian cooperation on the matter.
When asked if he planned to address the issue of sanctions placed on Russia over the annexation of Crimea in 2014, or the alleged offer from the Kremlin of lavish payments for US soldiers killed or wounded in Ukraine, Trump was coy, simply replying: "I don't want to mention that. I don't want to say that."
However, he did confirm that the talks will primarily focus on Ukraine, and not other issues such as Syria or nuclear weapons.
"I think that we're going to have a very good chance, better than ever, after this meeting," he said.
While the topic of Ukraine has increasingly come to define US-Russian relations as well as shaping the political fortunes of Trump and his allies the upcoming meeting could well provide fertile ground for the former president to pursue his longtime aim of improving relations between the two global powers.
At the same time, Trump made clear that there would be no concessions on Ukraine, albeit hinting at a possible future opening on the issue.
"I'm not going to negotiate out of that position, but I want to negotiate on everything else," he said.
As the controversial summit goes ahead, commentators and politicians will likely be watching closely to see if Trump makes any surprises moves, especially on issues beyond Ukraine.
