City boss Pep Guardiola wants to keep hold of talented youngster Jose Savinho for "many years", but admits he cannot guarantee playing time could lure others away from the Etihad Stadium.
The Portuguese midfielder, who turned 18 on Wednesday, has been impressive for City's under-21 side and recently made his senior debut in the 6-1 thrashing of Wycombe in the FA Cup.
He has also attracted interest from Tottenham and Barcelona, with his current deal in the north of England set to expire at the end of the season.
However, Guardiola sees a bright future for Savinho at City and hopes to extend his stay at the club. Yet the City boss also accepted that he cannot promise playing time, which could put decisions like Savinho's on the line.
"He is a City player, he is a very young guy, he is a talented player, I am happy with him," Guardiola told reporters on Wednesday.
"I would love for many years but I cannot say ."
"There are many players in the same position as him, they are young, come from the academy, and they don't play because the first team is much more competitive. They a decision their future."
"We are here to help, we want to have him but, at the same time, cannot give anything ."
"You can see with players like James McAtee, who is a fantastic player, it is tough for him to have minutes and a guy who deserves ."
"Young players, when they are able to make the step forward, they will do it and if they are not, they will go."
"This is the reality of this club and every club, there's nothing to be concerned about, it's part of the job."
"We are so happy here, want to be here for a long time, but we don't know what will happen in the future."
"I would like to have him but I don't know what's going to happen in his head, what his family will decide."
"We are here to help him but the final decision is not in our hands, it's in his hands and his family."
"That's it, we are happy with that, if he decides , we're delighted but if he decides another way, we will be here wishing him good luck because he is a City player and always will be a City player, whatever happens."
Guardiola's faith in Savinho is shared by the player's national team, with Portugal's under-21 coach Francisco Lucas stating earlier this season: "He is a very intelligent player, with a good perception of the game, and very adept at reading the game. He plays well with both feet. I see him as a player with a good future."
Stay tuned as we follow developments on Savinho's future at Manchester City.
