Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is set to launch a new initiative in Bihar, titled 'Vote Adhikar Yatra', which aims to bring attention to the alleged attack on voting rights in the state. In a recent statement, the leader announced that he will be commencing the yatra, or journey, through the state's Hajipur on August 17.
Congress states that the move is in response to the special intensive revision of the electoral rolls in Bihar, which allegedly targets a mass deletion of voters. The party alleges this is a tactic employed by the ruling party to dilute the voting power of the minority and the poorest sections of society.
Gandhi will be launching the yatra from the statue of queen Laxmibai in Hajipur, where he will be joined by local Congress leaders. It is believed that the move is a prelude to the Congress party's poll campaign for the upcoming state elections.
Only time will tell whether the initiative will be enough to reverse the tide against the party, which at present, is not a part of the state government.
