Devanur Mahadeva Calls for Implementing Internal Reservation Quota

In an open letter to the Chief Minister of Karnataka, Devanur Mahadeva urges swift action on the H.N. Nagamohan Das Commission report on internal reservation, aligning with the Supreme Court's judgment on the issue. The decision could impact thousands of Dalit converts to Christianity and Islam.

Kannada writer and activist Devanur Mahadeva has penned an open letter to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, urging him to implement the recommendations of the H.N. Nagamohan Das Commission report on internal reservation.

The commission's report, presented in June 2018, recommended a quota within a quota for Dalit Christians and Muslims within the current reservation systema measure meant to aid Dalit groups who have converted to Islam and Christianity amid systemic discrimination.

Mahadeva's letter comes after the Supreme Court's ruling in February this year, which ordered the Karnataka government to set up a committee to recommend the constitutionally permissible percentage of reservation based on socioeconomic grounds for communities that have converted to Christianity and Islam from the scheduled castes (SC) or scheduled tribes (ST) categories.

In his letter, Mahadeva emphasizes that the commission's recommendations were made "in keeping with the spirit of the Supreme Court judgement on the issue." He believes that the state government must take swift action to implement the recommendations without delay.

The activist argues that the decision could benefit thousands of Dalit converts to Christianity and Islam, providing them with more opportunities and thus helping to eradicate caste-based discrimination.
