Suicidal Note Blames 'Hypocrisy' in Education System

Sharda University student Shivam Dey's note criticizes excessive focus on exams and lack of empathy from educational institution.

Shivam Dey followed his father's footsteps to become a B. Tech student at Sharda University in Greater Noida. Tragically, the 24-year-old's promising potential ended abruptly when he was found dead in his hostel room, allegedly by his own hand. In a poignant note he left behind, Dey criticized the education system for what he termed its "hypocrisy," laying bare his disillusionment with the excessive focus on exams and the lack of empathy from the institution and its teachers.

The chilling incident has shone a spotlight on the demanding Indian education system and the pressure students endure. Experts who spoke to us say such pressures can lead to mental health crises and that campuses need to become more accommodating for those in distress.

Speaking after the incident, Dey's father, Subhash Kumar, expressed his shock and disbelief. He remembers his son, who was on a campus picnic when he died, as a happy and well-adjusted young man.

The police are continuing their investigation. Officers have confirmed the presence of the note and say they are looking into the possibility that Dey died by suicide.
