shaken by earthquakes, sulawesi and west papua prepare for aftermath

The early morning 5.7 magnitude earthquake that struck Sulawesi, Indonesia is the second seismic event this week prompting locals to prepare for potential aftershocks and repercussions. The earthquake jolted residents without causing any damage or loss of life, however, it was strong enough to shake locals out of bed. This latest earthquake comes just a day after a 6.3 quake hit West Papua on August 12. Both provinces are now on high alert for potential aftershocks and further seismic activity.

"We woke up suddenly at 1:00 am, we were all shocked. We quickly went outside and it felt like the earth was still shaking," Utami, a resident of Sulawesi told reporters. Many locals have already begun stocking up on basic necessities and preparing emergency supplies in case the situation worsens.

This is not the first time that Sulawesi has been hit by a significant amount of seismic activity. The devastating 2018 Palu earthquake which struck the island was a magnitude 7.5 earthquake that triggered landslides and sent waves towards the coastal city of Palu, resulting in the deaths of thousands. As authorities in both regions continue to assess the aftermath, locals in Sulawesi and West Papua are hoping that won't be the case this time.
