Trans students denied mental health support

Despite a surge in trans visibility, transgender students across India continue to experience profound isolation and a startling lack of mental health support in their institutions. Those who speak out about their traumatic experiences are often met with dismissal and ignorance.

Adi Goswami, a trans man and People Consultant at Bengaluru-based firm Zinnov, regrets asking for help from a college counsellor before transitioning. He recounts his experience as traumatic and dismissive, as he was told he was merely experiencing hormonal changes and was influenced by his surroundings and the media.

Many transgender students experience isolation and lack the mental health support they need in their institutions. The result can be traumatic, with devastating long-term effects on their mental health and well-being.

There is a pressing need for more inclusive and aware counselling and mental health services to support transgender students and others who require help. This silent majority of vulnerable students deserves better.

The trauma transgender students face compounded by a lack of mental health support can lead to devastating consequences. It's time we addressed this issue and provided a safe, supportive environment for every student.
