478 misbehaviour and harassment cases were reported at key temples during the Bonalu and Moharram festivals in Hyderabad, Telangana. The Hyderabad City Polices SHE teams were deployed at these locations to protect women and prevent harassment and misbehaviour during the festivals. The teams caught 478 individuals, comprising 386 adults and 92 minors. The misdemeanours of 288 of these individuals were let go with warnings. However, the police had to book four people in petty cases, fining them a total of Rs 1,050. Surprisingly, the police had to impose fines and jail sentences on five offenders. Eight FIRs were registered regarding these incidents at different police stations in the city.
The SHE team initiative was launched by the Telangana government on October 24, 2014. The team's safety initiatives included conducting 124 awareness programs in schools, colleges, and public areas. They also conducted 1,405 surveillance checks at public spots and 352 audio-visual awareness drives via mobile AV vans.
The team continues to engage in round-the-clock surveillance of the city and mapping hotspots and hot timings to protect women from offenders. Safety and security for women in the state are the team's paramount concerns.
