Carlos Alcaraz Wins Cincinnati Title After Sinner Retires Ill

Rising star Carlos Alcaraz has claimed the Cincinnati Open title after his opponent Jannik Sinner retired due to illness.

The match, which was underway with Alcaraz leading 5-0, provided a disappointing end to what was expected to be an exhilarating final. It was the Spaniard's 22nd title and served as a warm-up ahead of the US Open, for which Sinner has also qualified.

Sinner's management informed the umpire that the Italian would not be able to continue, citing a temperature of 38.5C (101.3F).

Although the retirement was unfortunate, Alcaraz's dominance continued until the very end, with the match finishing at 5-0, 4-2.

The Spanish teenager has been impressing on the court throughout the season and has been rewarded with a spot in the top 10 of the ATP rankings, becoming the youngest player to do so since Rafael Nadal in 2005.

He is now ranked number 9, and if he remains unchanged in the next week, he will face Sinner again in the US Open.

The pair have already met three times this year, with Alcaraz winning two of those matches.

Their last meeting at a Grand Slam was at the French Open last month, where Sinner emerged victorious in five sets.

It seems that the young players are ascending towards dominance in the tennis world, with the ever-consistent Nadal mentioning the 'changing of the guard' on numerous occasions.

For now, Alcaraz will enjoy his title, and Sinner will focus on recovering ahead of another Grand Slam.

The US Open begins on August 29.
