Despite advanced intelligence, major cities find themselves vulnerable to
attacksand failing to prevent them. What goes wrong?
With Hyderabad on the horizon for significant events, including the Bharat Summit
and Miss World 2025, the Telangana government has issued a security alert after
central intelligence agencies warned that more attacks could occur following the
Kashmir Pahalgam terror attack. In response, the police department has
heightened vigilance, particularly with two significant events set to take
place in Hyderabad the Bharat Summit (April 25-26) and the Miss World
competition (from May 7).
Following intelligence warnings of potential terrorist attacks across the
country, the state police have been instructed to remain on high alert. This
includes bolstering security in tourist areas and locations that have already
been targeted by terrorists. Special attention is being given to areas near
Hi-Tech City, where there is a high concentration of foreign nationals.
Counterintelligence teams are actively monitoring suspicious activities,
while police patrols and checks will be intensified, particularly in the old
city area known for housing many old criminals.
The Cyberabad Commissionerate area will be under intense surveillance
starting from the night of April 24. Additionally, security personnel will
conduct checks in neighborhoods with a high number of foreign visitors. The
police are also focusing on areas with a history of criminal activity to
prevent any untoward incidents during these high-profile events.
Cyber security experts opine that there is a need for increasing the budget
for cybersecurity measures and to set up a chief cybersecurity officer
responsible for coordinating with event organizers and the IT industry to
ensure cybersecurity.
"Events like the Bharat Summit and Miss World are soft targets for
terrorists, and authorities need to be extra cautious and prepare
countermeasures to prevent such attacks," said a cybersecurity expert not
willing to be quoted.
All major cities with past terror attacks have a comprehensive
counterterrorism plan. Still, a lack of coordination and communication
amongst the various agencies and event organizers often results in an
inadequate response, even failing to prevent an attack.
"It is sad that the nation's prestigious events are often soft targets for
terrorists, and we must be proactive this time to prevent any disaster,"
said a senior police officer.
All law enforcement agencies have been instructed by Chief Secretary
Shanti Kumari and DGP Jitender to take immediate action.
