Ambati Rayudu On Suryakumar Yadav's T20 WC Final Catch: 'Broadcasters Pushed The Rope...'

Rayudu claims semi-final catch controversy was 'created'

Former India batsman Ambati Rayudu has stated that the contentious boundary catch during the final of the 2024 T20 World Cup was, in fact, pushed back by broadcasters, and not pulled by South Africa's Aiden Markram as widely claimed.

Speaking to Indus News, Rayudu, who was a part of the Indian squad that competed in the 2024 tournament, insisted that the broadcasters pushed the rope into the field of play from the sidelines while Markram was trying to complete a crucial catch in the final against Australia.

"They (the broadcasters) pushed the rope of the boundary into the field of play. I was watching the game live and I could clearly see that the rope was pushed by the broadcasters," Rayudu said.

"I was also shocked to see that the third umpire did not intervene on the field, as it was clear that the fielder (Markram) was standing inside the boundary. I could clearly see the mark on the rope, which was pushed inside," he added.

Rayudu's remarks bear similarities to India batter Suryakumar Yadav's comments on the contentious catch, with the latter also claiming that the boundary was pushed by the broadcasters during a recent interview.

The catch caused a stir as the umpire ruled Markram's catch legitimate, granting South Africa five crucial runs, which eventually proved to be the difference in a tight finish.

The former India batsman also stated that if the incident had occurred in a franchise competition, the third umpire would have intervened and corrected the on-field official's call.

"If this happens in a franchise competition, the third umpire comes into the picture and they will correct it," he added.

Ultimately, Rayudu feels the Catch-22 situation proved costly for India, who lost the match and the tournament by a narrow margin.

"It (the catch) was a crucial thing, maybe if we could have taken that catch, we could have won the game," he said.

"We were just unlucky and it is part of the game, we cannot do anything about it."
