Hyderabad's troubled teens and the police operation turning violent

Hyderabad, a city of nearly 10 million people, is well known for its scrumptious food and vibrant culture. However, beneath this veneer of normalcy, the city hides a darker side. Operation Chabutra, a police initiative to curb teenage crime, is allegedly resorting to brutal force, igniting fears among the local youth.

In the last month, three teenagers have been beaten to death while in police custody, with their families and peers alleging that the violence was provoked by the police. This has led to a rising clamor for accountability and change within the system.

One 17-year-old, Ali Khan, recounts his traumatic experience after being stopped by the police for a routine check. "I was coming back from tution. It was late evening, and they took me to the Chabutra shed at Musheerabad. They started beating me and four others with belts and lathis. I fell unconscious after a while."

Critics point to a broader societal issue fueling teenage frustration, ultimately culminating in violent police confrontation. With close to half of the city's teens dropping out of school and a lack of economic opportunities, many turn to petty crime as a means of survival.

Social worker Sana Jaffery says: "The cops are clearly using excessive force, but the question is, why are these kids out on the streets so late? Why are they unable to study and dream of a better future? Who is responsible for this societal failure?"

The police maintain that such excessive force claims are exaggerations, withRPC Balwinder stating, "All these allegations of brutality are fabricated. Yes, we do use mild force to control the crowd, but beating to death is simply untrue."

The broader public implication is that Operation Chabutra is necessary to maintain law and order. However, it may be doing more harm than good, impacting an already vulnerable segment of the population with brutal force.

As tensions rise and controversy around Operation Chabutra gains attention, it remains to be seen what steps the authorities will take to address these pressing issues.
