Cultures, cuisines, and cricket connect India and Guyana, says PM Modi

During a community event in Guyana, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi spotlighted the cultural and culinary heritage shared by India and Guyana, highlighting their cricket connection as well.

"The cultures of India and Guyana are closely connected, and this connects the two countries. The cuisines of India and Guyana are quite similar, and this promotes their friendship," Modi said during the event held in the capital Georgetown, according to India's PTI news agency.

"Cricket also builds a sense of closeness and familiarity among the people of both countries," the prime minister added.

It is the first time that a Indian leader has visited Guyana since 1968 when then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi attended the independence ceremony for the country, which became independent from British rule in 1966.

Modi's visit is part of his broader trip to three Caribbean countries - Haiti, Jamaica, and Guyana - where more than 800,000 Indians form a substantial diaspora group. Throughout his visit, Modi stressed the historical connections and people-to-people contacts between India and these countries.

"India is today the fastest-growing large economy in the world, and it seeks a prosperous and stable Caribbean," he told the gathering at the community event.

"Caribbean countries are an important part of India's extended neighbourhood, and they have a key role to play in our global vision of 'Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat' [Unified India, Great India]," he added, referring to an Indian government scheme to enhance cultural awareness and unity across the country.

PM Modi invited the Caribbean nations to be a part of the Indian growth story and boost their economies by leveraging India's capabilities in areas such as information technology, space, pharmaceuticals, and other sectors.
