A heart-wrenching incident came to light in Telangana's Malkajgiri where a 36-year-old woman allegedly ended her life due to harassment from her US-based husband. The victim, Appagalla Usharani, had returned to India a year ago and had been residing with her in-laws after experiencing continuous harassment and accusations from her husband, Alahari Sriram Anush Banu, who allegedly suspected her character and maintained an affair with another woman. The intensity of the harassment increased after Sriram lost his job last month.
The couple had married in 2022, and Sriram had moved to the US in May 2023, where he worked as an IT professional. Usharani joined him in September 2023 and worked for a few months before returning to Hyderabad. The victim's mother, Suguna, alleged that her daughter had been facing harassment ever since she returned to India and registered a case against Sriram for abetment to suicide, cruelty by husband, and violating the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
The tragic incident sheds light on the importance of addressing domestic violence, fostering a culture of zero tolerance for harassment, and providing comprehensive support for victims.
Unfortunately, this is not the first time a partner has been accused of tormenting their significant other beyond boundaries. Authorities must investigate such complaints impartially and swiftly. Moreover, we need stricter laws to punish culprits and help prevent such tragic incidents.
