After the closure of a martial arts training camp operated by Darsgah-E-Jihad-O-Shahadat (DJS) in Hyderabad, tensions rose on Tuesday. The centre, located in Saidabad, was created in response to the growing number of lynchings of Muslims across the country. Approximately 100 candidates signed up to learn defensive skills such as karate. However, the centre was forcibly shut down, prompting protests from Maulana Naseeruddin, President Wahdat-e-Islami, who protested against the police action.
The centre, founded in 1983 by Shaikh Mahboob Ali, provides martial arts training to Muslim youths at the Hazrat Ujale-Shah Eid Gah Grounds in Akbarbagh Saidabad to defend themselves. The camp's temporary closure in 2013 following the death of DJS president Shaik Mahboob Ali was revived as a Learn self defence & Save Ummah initiative in Saidabad, a sensitive area. The police were forced to increase their alert.
The group claims to have educated approximately 50,000 individuals, including Muslim girls and women, in self-defense techniques at its training camps. According to Times of India reports, DJS president Mohammed Abdul Majid stated that the organisation never promoted communal hatred among youths, but it prides itself on having trained fifty thousand Muslim youths in self-defense. This is because it is critical to providing self-defense training to young people in the community.
The centre's closure highlights growing concerns over Muslim persecution, sparking protests from Muslim groups.
