Auto driver drags cop for 120 metres after she tries to stop him for drunk driving

A video has emerged of a drunk auto driver in Maharashtra's Palghar district allegedly dragging a woman police officer along a road for 120 metres when she tried to stop him from driving under the influence. The incident, which took place on the night of December 25 at a busy junction in Palghar, is being investigated by the authorities. The driver, Achar Sapte, was detained while the officer, identified as Bhagyashree Jadhav, was taken to the hospital for treatment.

According to reports, the officer, who was off-duty at the time, signalled Sapte to stop the auto at the junction, but he instead accelerated and dragged the officer along the road. The shocking incident was captured on CCTV cameras in the area, showing the officer clinging to the auto's windshield as she was dragged along. The video, which has since gone viral on social media, shows several people attempting to stop the auto and help the officer.

Speaking to the media, Palghar's Superintendent of Police (SP) Rajendra Mane said that the officer, who sustained injuries to her hands and legs, is undergoing treatment at a local hospital. Sapte is being investigated by the authorities for drunk driving and assault on a public servant, among other charges.

The incident has drawn widespread criticism and concerns over road safety in the state. Reflecting on the incident, Bhagyashree Jadhav stated, "I am thankful to have survived the ordeal. This New Year, let us all resolve to respect the law and contribute to safer roads for everyone."

As investigations continue, concerns over drunk driving and respect for traffic rules have risen in Maharashtra. The incident serves as a grim reminder of the urgent need for stricter enforcement of traffic laws and increased awareness to ensure the safety of citizens on the roads.
