Concern over the suspected use of adulterated ghee in temple prasadam has intensified, with reports suggesting this could be happening at the Srikalahasti Temple and several other shrines across Andhra Pradesh. The alleged use of adulterated ghee in the Tirumala laddu prasadam is currently under a high-level investigation by the state government. The Srikalahasti temple requires approximately eight tonnes of ghee each month for prasadam and rituals. Devotees and temple staff have raised complaints about the quality of the ghee used there for years, stating it lacks its signature aroma, taste, and color. Temple staff noted that the ghee even solidified during the summer months, further raising concerns about its quality.
Despite these concerns being brought to the attention of temple authorities, no significant action has been taken so far. However, the issue surrounding the Tirumala ghee has intensified worries at Srikalahasti, prompting the state endowments department to order inspections of the ghee and other ingredients supplied to various temples, including Srikalahasti. Prior to the change in the state government three months ago, the Srikalahasti temple used to source its ghee from well-known brands like Vijaya and Nandini. Currently, the temple procures its ghee from the Vaishnavi and Tirumala brands, with contractors from Tirupati supplying the required quantities
Devotees have raised questions regarding the decision of the new administration to switch from established brands like Vijaya and Nandini to newer suppliers.
