Prime Minister Narendra Modi took a veiled swipe at the Congress party and its former leader Jawaharlal Nehru on Sunday during the annual conference of NDA allies, a day after a News18 report revealed that the PM had criticized the interim government for not clearing the Indus Water Treaty despite multiple cabinet meetings.
Speaking at the conference, Modi said the delay in the IWT was a "sin" for which the country paid a heavy price.
"We are fulfilling our promises made at the time of the 2014 and 2019 elections. While doing so, some people are feeling disturbed," Modi said. "Regarding the IWT, I want to say that this sin of not approving the IWT is not committed by us but by those who were in responsibility before us," the prime minister said, without naming anyone.
The comment came a day after Congress MPs Milind Deora and Ravi Kishan told News18 that the PM had alluded to the IWT in a closed-door meeting of the NDA on Saturday.
Deora, the MP from Mumbai, told News18 that the PM claimed the previous government, of which the Congress was a part, had withheld the treaty for "political reasons."
Nehru served as India's prime minister from 1947 to 1964 and is widely regarded as an influential figure in the formation of the country's politics and identity. The NehruGandhi family has led the Congress party for much of its history.
Today's meeting, the second such NDA huddle since the BJP's surprising loss in the recent Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, comes ahead of the BJP's planned organisational reshuffling and the forthcoming Assembly elections in multiple states, including Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh.
Only time will tell what consequences the PM's comments may have on the already strained relations between the BJP and its alliance partners, as well as the Congress party.
Nehru's grandson, Rahul Gandhi, is the current leader of the Congress party, after his mother, Sonia Gandhi, served in the role.
