Supreme Court Dismisses Last-Minute Plea Ahead of Maharashtra Elections

The Supreme Court of India has dismissed a last-minute petition seeking the cancellation of the Maharashtra elections over allegations of fraudulent voting, according to reports by News18. The plea argued that there were tens of thousands of such votes registered in the state, and alleged that this would result in voters casting more than one vote a claim that the Supreme Court called unfounded.

The court argued that canceling polls on such grounds would set a problematic precedent and undermine the election process.

"There is no substance in the plea... If the elections are to be stalled every time such claims are made, then when will the elections happen?"

The Supreme Court further added that there will be appropriate remedies available to interested parties after the elections, should such allegations of bogus voting come up then and parties believe there has been electoral fraud.

The elections, which are slated to happen on October 21, are a heated affair this year as several prominent politicians are vying for influential positions in the state, including the post of Chief Minister.

These positions are critical in determining the future of the state and influential candidates are prepared to rig the elections if needed, to win these positions.

The plea was filed by the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) party, a regional political party.

Although the party has been increasingly gaining popularity, it is still a minor party and a decision like this will certainly impact its following and reputation.

The elections of Maharashtra will be eagerly watched by scrutinizing eyes across the nation.
