UChicago Medicine AdventHealth GlenOaks Launches Medically Assisted Detox Program

Addressing a pressing community need, UChicago Medicine AdventHealth GlenOaks has introduced a medically assisted detox program catering to individuals grappling with drug or alcohol addiction.

As the first step towards recovery, patients must undergo detoxification to rid their systems of drugs and alcohol. Recognizing this critical gap, GlenOaks' program strives to simplify the process by admitting patients to the hospital, administering anti-craving medications, and tending to other concurrent medical conditions.

To ensure continued care after discharge, the program also facilitates connections with rehab providers and other resources to support patients' ongoing journey to recovery.

According to Deb Ayanian, Chief Nursing Officer at GlenOaks, the program is uniquely positioned to support patients amid detoxification and medical needs while providing essential guidance to bolster ongoing recovery. Under the medical direction of Rajeswar Rajagopalan, the program's board-certified physician in internal medicine and addiction medicine is well-equipped to address a myriad of addictions, including alcohol, opioids, sedative hypnotics, cocaine, and amphetamines.

Since its launch in mid-December, over 90 patients have benefited from the program, adhering to best practices and protocols outlined by the American Society of Addiction Medicine and the American Board of Preventative Medicine. Moreover, the program accepts most insurance, including Medicaid and Medicaid Managed Care.

Ayanian and Rajagopalan intend to further develop a continuum of addiction treatment services at GlenOaks, including residential rehabilitation. They encourage individuals to recognize the severity of substance use disorders and seek help if needed.
