Pavitrotsavam begins at Srikalahasti temple in Andhra Pradesh

The annual purificatory ritual ‘Swami Ammavarla Pavitrotsavam’ commenced at the Srikalahastheeswara Swamy Devasthanams in Srikalahasti town on Friday.

This yearly event aims to give a celestial bath to the various deities and conduct rituals to counteract the ill effects of any inadvertent sins committed by the purohits and other temple staff throughout the year.

According to mythology and folklore, it was a spider (Sri), a serpent (Kala), and an elephant (Hasti) that first prayed to the ‘Shivalinga’ at this ancient temple. Consequently, the shrine came to be known as ‘Srikalahasti’ after the trio.

On the first day, the priests performed ‘Abhishekam’ on the idols of the spider, serpent, and elephant consecrated in the temple. The deity of Sage Bharadwaja was also given a holy bath during the occasion.

Srikalahasti MLA Bojjala Venkata Sudheer Reddy, accompanied by his family members, visited the temple to offer prayers. Temple officials, led by the Executive Officer, gave him a traditional welcome.
