BJP and AIADMK Form Local Alliance in Tamil Nadu Only

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the AIADMK alliance will continue to be confined to the state of Tamil Nadu, for the upcoming 2026 polls, according to local BJP leader Rajah Chengam.

The alliance between the BJP and the AIADMK, which ruled Tamil Nadu until earlier this year, does not currently have plans to expand to the union territory of Puducherry, despite requests from local leadership.

The national leadership of both parties is happy with the arrangement and there is no immediate plan to change it, Mr. Chengam, the BJP's Puducherry in-charge, told Bloomberg.

The AIADMK Puducherry leadership has requested Chief Minister N. Rangasamy to convene a meeting of the National Democratic Alliance to sort out issues.

The union territory of Puducherry, which borders Tamil Nadu, has a significant ethnically Tamil population and has been under the control of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party since June of 2023.

The DMK, a socialist party, has ruled the state of Tamil Nadu since the demise of J. Jayalalitha, who was the charismatic leader of the AIADMK.

The AIADMK has recently experienced a change in leadership with the emergence of K. Palaniswami as the new powerful figure in the party.

Palaniswami, who served as chief minister for a year beginning in 2017, has the support of the party's legislature and is expected to be the AIADMK's candidate for chief minister in the next election,

Despite the AIADMK's fragmentation, the local BJP leadership is more interested in maintaining the status quo in Tamil Nadu and does not want to rock the boat by making any changes to the alliance dynamics.

The AIADMK has traditionally been more successful in state elections than in elections to the national parliament.

Despite this fact, the BJP leadership is content to maintain their alliance with the AIADMK at the state level, where the AIADMK has a stronger presence and the BJP has negligible influence.

Ultimately, the arrangement allows both parties to maintain their political clout in the state of Tamil Nadu.
