Aid ship with 1,200 tonnes of food approaches Gaza; will it get there?

Getting food into the Gaza Strip has become a seemingly insurmountable challenge for humanitarian organizations, so responders are increasingly turning to unconventional methods.

A ship carrying 1,200 tonnes of wheat, rice, lentils, sugar, and cooking oil left Cyprus last week, and is currently approaching the Israeli port of Ashdod, where it is being held for inspection, according to Haaretz. The vessel, which is operated by the Dutch charity Sailors without Borders, is carrying aid supplies enough to feed hundreds of thousands of people for weeks.

"Depriving people of food has serious consequences for the security and stability of the region," Ahmed Abu Holoub, a Palestinian member of the Israeli Knesset, was quoted as saying. "This is why Israel must allow the entry of goods through the port of Gaza or the Kerem Shalom crossing, as a humanitarian gesture to ease the suffering of the Gaza residents."

The small Palestinian enclave of 2 million people has been under a strict Israeli blockade since 2007, and humanitarian organizations have repeatedly warned that the blockade and repeated conflicts have created a man-made crisis, including chronic poverty, unemployment, and malnutrition.

The Israeli defense ministry said that upon arrival at Ashdod, the cargo will be inspected by Israeli authorities "to ensure no security risks or prohibited items will enter Gaza," according to the Associated Press.

Whether the aid onboard the ship will eventually reach those who need it remains to be seen.
