Broken down monorail leaves hundreds stranded, injures several

Almost 400 passengers were trapped inside the monorail today after an urgent suspension of services due to a critical malfunction in both engines. At least 10 deaths have been reported, and hundreds displaced.

At around 4:30 this afternoon, the Mumbai Monorail Corporation Limited (MMCL) halted the services on the city's lone Monorail line after the breakdown of the engine in the train that had just departed the Mysore Colony station for the Bhakti Park station. The MMCL, in a statement, claimed that the train had suffered a malfunction in both its primary and backup engines, forcing the train to come to a halt, stranding its passengers inside. According to MMCL, the passengers were safely evacuated with the help of the fire brigade, and so far, 10 of the 442 passengers inside the stranded monorail have been reported dead, and several others injured.

This news comes only a month after the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) approving the monorail's renewal for a period of three years which MMCL is currently in the process of negotiating.

The cause of the engine malfunction is under investigation. The MMCL has notified the contractor of the monorail, Larsen and Toubro (L&T), to take immediate action to rectify the fault.

The sudden disruption of the monorail service has left many affected citizens voicing their concerns about public safety and transportation reliability. MMCL has stated that they will be investigating the cause of the engine failure to implement corrective actions to prevent such an event from occurring in the future.
