Palla calls VSP privatisation charges by Opposition false propaganda

Recent comments by PSU Reviewer Palla over Vocal for Local didn't sit well with many. Now, he has defended the viability of VSP as a PSU, saying privatisation of some sections is necessary

In an exclusive interview with CNBC-TV18, Paul Ravindran, the outgoing chairman and managing director of state-owned Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSP) termed accusations of privatisation of the centre as "false propaganda".

Ravindran, better known as Palla, said that several tough decisions were on the anvil to ensure the centre's continuity as a public sector unit (PSU).

"There is a need for a complete reorientation andrestructuring of our organisational framework, workload distribution, and business models to make the centres more flexible, responsive, and competitive."

Palla said that the Centre of Excellence (CoE) model followed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) could be a good precedent for VSP.

"Privatisation is a sensitive issue. Some harsh decisions are inevitable for the continuation of VSP as a PSU, and this includes the privatisation of some sections of the plant to improve productivity and reduce costs, he says."

The comments by Palla over "Vocal for Local" not translating into public sector buying of localised products had kicked up a storm. The Centre later clarified its policy, highlighting that it wants to ensure that "Make in India" extends to the public sector as well.
