The Philippine Senate is investigating widespread allegations of marijuana use inside the chamber's halls allegations that one senator has described as "nakakahiya" or embarrassing.
Senator Panfilo Lacson, who heads the chamber's justice and human rights committee, said it was embarrassing that marijuana smoke allegedly reached the Senate gallery, where visitors watch proceedings.
"I don't smoke, but even I felt it," he told reporters on Wednesday, adding that visitors were "buzzing" and asking each other, "What's happening?"
A medical doctor who was in the gallery at the time told the committee that the smoke triggered an asthma attack, forcing her to leave.
Lacson, a former police chief, said he would recommend further investigations and more stringent security measures.
The Senate president and several other senators have also condemned the allegations, saying the chamber would not tolerate such acts.
