Former Vice President, Jagdeep Dhankhar, has not yet requested retention of his official residence in New Delhi, despite having 30 days from his tenure conclusion to do so. In the meantime, the government has assigned Type VIII Bungalow in Lutyens' Delhi to him.
The government's decision comes after the former vice president's controversial remarks about the Prime Minister's Office and the Supreme Court. Dhankhar was elected Vice President in August 2021 and assumed office in August 2022, serving one of the shortest terms in the history of the second highest Indian office. His term ended on 10 August 2023, and he was replaced by Pavilionkkar Ravindra, who was elected in July 2023.
According to government protocols, former vice presidents are allowed to retain their official residences for up to 30 days after leaving office. So far, Dhankhar is among the latest former VP's to have served without requesting retention of the residence. The government has therefore assigned bungalow Type VIII in the prestigious Lutyens' neighborhood to Dhankhar, as per protocol.
It remains to be seen whether Dhankhar will take advantage of his 30-day residence retention right.
The former Vice President has been controversial for his remarks on numerous public platforms, attracting both criticism and praise from different sections of society. His comments range from accusing the Supreme Court of failing to act impartially to expressing skepticism about the need for the Prime Minister's Office.
At the end of the 30-day period, the government will take over the residence if Dhankhar does not express intention to retain it. Given his recent inflammatory remarks, it remains to be seen whether Dhankhar will bother to retain it or whether he will move on from the political scene, preferring to work through his independent legal practices instead.
