Fentanyl and other opioids continue to pose significant challenges for law enforcement officers, causing an escalating overdose crisis and posing danger to field drug identification. Traditional drug testing methods involve breaking glass ampules filled with hazardous chemicals, posing a contamination risk.

To address these issues, Florida International University's Global Forensic and Justice Center (GFJC) has launched the Academic-based Drug Field Testing and Training Initiative. They offer a free 45-minute online training course to empower officers to identify dangerous substances such as fentanyl and its analogs. It also introduces a handheld Raman spectrometer, which allows officers to analyze substances without direct contact, eliminating the risk of contamination.

The program is designed in collaboration with law enforcement agencies and incorporates feedback from officers. It is hoped that this initiative will become a standard nationwide to provide officers with the tools and training to address the evolving drug threat.
