Samsung exploring new display tech to fight screen peeking and snooping

Whether you're worried about stalkers or just annoying siblings or parents, everyone deserves some screen privacy. Sadly, with the proliferation of ultra-wide angle camera lenses and powerful digital zoom, just holding your phone at a wide angle or peeking from a bit of a distance isn't enough to protect your screen from prying eyes. It looks like Samsung may be tackling this problem soon, hopefully starting with the Galaxy S26 Ultra.

According to a new report from SamMobile, Samsung has filed a design patent for a new type of privacy-protected display technology. Specifically, the patent describes a system that would make use of a new kind of pixelated film which creates a specific visual effect at a certain distance.

In theory, this would allow the user to see their screen clearly when holding the phone normally, but anyone trying to peek at the screen from an angle or distance would see nothing but a black screen, seeming obscuring the content you're viewing.

While this is certainly an appealing idea, it's important to remember that patents don't always translate perfectly into real-world products. Even if this new screen does make its way to the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra, don't expect this feature to be bulletproof. Peeking at someone's screen in person will always have some obstacles, but it's probably not going to be completely impossible.

Still, any step towards more digital privacy is a welcome one, and we're excited to see what Samsung does with this promising (if currently hypothetical) new technology.
