A curious case recently at the Delhi airport involving a Mumbai-born passenger that sparked off multiple security checks and discussions within the administration. Officials were prompted to raid the passenger's home in Navi Mumbai, where they found no criminality.
More than a week ago, a senior airport security officer said the travellers passport named him as Mohammad Rasool Najeeb Khan, with a Navi Mumbai address and Mumbai recorded as his birthplace.
When the officer asked him to identify the location of Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, India's most crowded railway station, the man, who was wearing a medical mask, failed to do so. The officer then asked him to name a nearby mall. Still, the man couldn't answer, prompting the officer to ask about the Mumbai airport and the Gateway of India, a major tourist attraction. The passenger failed to answer three consecutive questions.
The officer grew suspicious and sent the man to another counter for a secondary screening. But the passenger's odd behaviour had only just begun.
According to the officer, he failed to answer basic questions at the secondary screening counter. These included questions such as the capital of Maharashtra, India, and the minister in charge of the airport. The officer then summoned supervisors and conducted another round of questioning. When the supervisors also ran into the same problems, they concluded that the man posed a security risk and called the police.
Raid at the man's home
The police arrived at the airport and, after questioning the man for several hours, decided to raid his home in Navi Mumbai. They found nothing suspicious or harmful, and the man was eventually let go.
The incident has prompted discussions within the administration, with officials wondering how many other 'suspicious' people have passed through without being flagged by the multiple security checks.
